Convert a QuickBooks IIF file to CSV

QuickBooks Desktop's IIF export opens in neither Excel nor Xero. Upload it here and get a real CSV and xlsx, with the transactions and the date reading shown before you pay.

IIF does not record which convention it used. Most QuickBooks Desktop exports are month-first; leave this on auto unless the preview gets it wrong.

How it works.

IIF is a QuickBooks Desktop format nothing else reads, and its column order and even which columns exist changes from one export to the next, so a converter that hardcodes the layout breaks on the next file. This reads the header line of each section and maps every row by name. The one thing that still has to be checked before you pay is which way round the dates go, since IIF is usually a US export but says so nowhere in the file itself.

Step 1

Upload your IIF export

From QuickBooks Desktop: File, Utilities, Export, Lists to IIF Files, or however your version phrases a transaction export. One file at a time.

Step 2

Check the date reading

The preview states how the dates were read and shows the row that settled it. If it looks wrong, set the date order below and preview again before you pay.

Step 3

Download the CSV and xlsx

Every transaction, not just the preview's first 20, as a plain CSV and as a real xlsx with the dates and amounts typed correctly.

Questions, answered.

Why can't Excel or Xero just open the IIF file?
IIF is Intuit's own tab-separated format for QuickBooks Desktop, structured as one header line naming that section's columns followed by data rows, and it is not CSV, XML or any format either Excel or Xero parses. That mismatch is the entire reason this tool exists.
What happens with dates like 03/04/2024?
On their own those are genuinely ambiguous. The whole file is checked for a row where one reading is impossible, such as a day past 12, and that settles it for every row. If nothing in the file settles it, QuickBooks Desktop is overwhelmingly a US product so it defaults to month-first, and the preview says plainly that it is a default rather than a finding, so you can set it yourself before paying.
What does it do with split transactions?
A QuickBooks transaction has the account it hit (the TRNS line) and one or more offsetting accounts (the SPL lines). A single split becomes the category on that row; more than one is listed in the memo instead of dropped, since a split transaction is still one line in a spreadsheet.
Does it handle list-only IIF exports, like a customer or item list?
No, this reads transaction exports specifically, the ones with a !TRNS header. A list export has a different shape entirely and is refused with an explanation rather than misread as transactions.
What happens to my file?
It is deleted within 7 days, along with the finished CSV and xlsx. It is used to make your file and nothing else. Nobody reads it.
Do I need an account?
No. There is no signup, no subscription and no password. You upload, you see the result, you pay once if you want it.
