Make a funeral programme, tonight

Fill in the order of service, add a photo, and get a PDF with the pages arranged so it folds in the right order. Made for the week when you have three days, no design experience, and no patience for software.

As it should read on the front.
Optional. Written however your family says it.
Some families use Celebrating the life of, or a name for the service.
The single A5 sheet prints only the front and the order of service. Readings, pallbearers, survived by and the back page need the bi-fold, even though the preview shows all four pages either way.
One line each, in order. Add who does it after a | if you want. Paste it straight out of the email from the minister.
Optional. Goes on the facing page. Same one-per-line format.
Optional. Commas or one per line.

How it works.

The part that goes wrong is the fold. The bi-fold here is one sheet of A4, printed both sides and folded once, and its four pages do not print in reading order: the front cover shares a side with the back page. Lay it out in reading order in Word and the back cover ends up inside the programme, which you find out at the copy shop the day before the funeral. This does that arrangement for you and shows you the pages in reading order so you can check the words. It is made for A4 paper, so on US Letter it prints slightly smaller.

Step 1

Fill in what you know

The name is the only thing that has to be there. Everything else can be blank now and filled in when the family decides. Nothing is lost by starting before it is all settled.

Step 2

Add the photo and look at it

The preview shows the four pages in reading order, at real proportions, so you can check the spelling of every name, and that nothing long has been cut off at the bottom of a page, before anyone prints anything. That preview is free.

Step 3

Download and print

You get one PDF with the pages already arranged for folding and 3 mm of bleed on every edge. The preview tells you how to run it through the printer, and so does the answer below.

Trust, with receipts.

No invented review scores, no badges, no “trusted by thousands”. Here is what is actually true, and you can check every line of it.

Questions, answered.

How many should I print?
There is no fixed rule. Advice from programme printers ranges from about three quarters of the people you expect to a little more than one each, since couples often share one and some people keep theirs. If you are unsure, lean towards more.
Can the funeral home print this?
Usually, but ask them. The PDF has 3 mm of bleed on every edge and no crop marks, so tell them the finished size: A4 folded once for the bi-fold, or A5 for the single sheet. If the funeral home offers to design programmes for you, ask what that costs. This is one payment for the file, and you print it wherever suits you.
How do I print it at home?
One sheet of A4, double sided, flipping on the short edge, then fold it once down the middle. The file is slightly bigger than A4 because of the bleed, so choose Fit to page if your printer asks. If your printer has no double-sided mode, print page one, put the sheet back in, and print page two, and try it on a spare sheet first to see which way up it needs to go.
What if I do not know the order of service yet?
Start anyway. Fill in what you know and look at the preview, which is free and can be run again as the details change. Pay once the words are settled, because the file you pay for is made from what is in the form at that point.
Does it handle a religious service?
It prints the order you type, in the order you type it, whatever the service is. It does not impose a running order on you or rearrange anything, because a Catholic Mass, a Baptist service, a Janazah and a celebration of life do not run the same way and software guessing which one you are having would be worse than useless.
What happens to the photo I upload?
It is deleted within 7 days, along with the finished PDF. It is used to make your programme and nothing else.
I need this in the next hour.
It takes about ten minutes to fill in and the PDF is made as soon as you pay. If something goes wrong at the printer, email us and we will fix the file as soon as we see the email. We are based in Johannesburg, so if it is the middle of the night in South Africa, that can take a few hours.
