Save a Telegram chat as a PDF
Telegram can export a chat, but only from Telegram Desktop, and only as HTML or JSON. Here is how to do it, and how to get a proper PDF out of the JSON.
Your preview
This is your real file, parsed. Pay only if the result is right.
How it works.
Telegram's JSON export is complete but not made for reading. The awkward part is that a message's text is sometimes a plain string and sometimes a list of pieces, which is why some converters leave things like {"type":"bold"} in the middle of a sentence. This puts the sentence back together.
Export from Telegram Desktop
In Telegram Desktop, open the chat, click the three dots, choose Export chat history, and pick Machine-readable JSON as the format. Telegram writes a folder with result.json in it, plus your photos if you included them.
Upload the folder or the file
Zip the whole folder and drop it here so the photos come through. If you only want the text, the result.json on its own is fine.
Check it, then download
You see the messages parsed before paying. The PDF opens with the message count and the date range, then the conversation with dates and names, and photos if you add them.
Four ways to print it.
Every sample below is page one of a real PDF, made from the same sample as the one above by the same code that makes your file. Pick a style when you preview, and change it as often as you like.
Export from Telegram Desktop
- Install Telegram Desktop on a computer and log in.
- Open the chat, click the three dots at the top right, and choose Export chat history.
- Tick photos if you want them, and set the format to Machine-readable JSON.
- Telegram writes a folder with result.json in it. Zip the whole folder to keep the photos, or upload result.json alone for the text.
Why not just print the HTML export
Telegram's HTML export splits long chats across many files and prints with the browser's layout. The JSON is complete but written for machines: the text of a message is sometimes split into pieces, which is why some converters leave fragments like {"type":"bold"} in sentences. This puts the sentences back together and lays the chat out with dates and names.
